Photographer No.2- Jonathan Knowles

I have chosen Jonathan Knowles as one of my photographer as he has a unique way of photographing products especially liquid products such as beer, coke and drinks from costa. I feel that in his photographs he lets the product do most of the work rather than everything else in the photograph. He is also able to appeal to different audiences when referring to the product even though there is only one photograph. Also i like his use of colours when thinking about the type of product or company in which he is advertising.

This first photograph by Jonathan Knowles is advertising 'Diet Coke'. There is a large image to text ratio which is commonly used in commercial photograph as images are more likely to attract an audience compared to large amounts of text. It can be argued that this commercial photograph has been adapted to appeal to both mens and women. For example it says 'There is nothing like a six pack to put a smile on your face' which can either mean a six pack on the model which would appeal to women or a six pack of diet coke which is going to appeal to both genders, The company logo has been placed in the bottom corner of the photograph along with 'no calories' which would help with the persuasive element of the photograph,

This second photograph by jonathan Knowles is advertising 'Carling'. When looking at wear things have been placed in the composition, i can clearly identify that the pint of carling has been placed in the centre of the composition to ensure that it main focus. The colour of the photograph is mainly black with lighter tones behind the pint of Carling. In the bottom quarter of the composition, there is a reflection of the pint of carling as well as the company logo which is a common element with commercial photographs. When thinking about the text which has been edited on the photograph, there is an elliptical sentence of 'Practice makes...'. The fact that it is placed above the pint of carling, the audience are then able to infer that the pint of carling is perfection which would complete the sentence.

This third photograph by Jonathan Knowles is advertising a drink at Costa. Firstly when looking at the colours that have been used, there seems to be a use of natural, earthy colour which would relate to Costa itself as there drink are made with natural ingredients. Also the use of natural, earthy colours relates to the fact that this is promoting a new autumn drink therefore these are colours we would expect to see in autumn for example on blossom trees.  Furthermore when looking at where thing have been placed in the composition i can identify that the costa glass has been placed in the centre of the composition along with a small sign which is acknowledging the drink which is in the glass.

This last photograph is by Jonathan Knowles and is advertising Cadbury's dairy milk chocolate. This commercial photograph is different from many others that i have looked at as it does not have any text on it or the company logo on the bottom section of the composition. This is most probably due to Cadbury being such larger well known company that it is not necessarily needed. Also this could mean that the image simple explain everything. By having the image of the chocolate melting would temp the audience to want the chocolate as it look so good, The background is a block purple which is the typical colour which is associated with the company Cadburys.
Influence:
This photographer has influenced me in a way in which i have started to look into photographing products such as drinks and food as this something that i did not think of doing when creating my project proposal. This has allowed me to look at different lighting set ups as liquids require specific lighting to ensure that it can be seen. Also in further shoots i would like to incorporate texts when editing the photograph to add to the persuasive side of the photograph.

Summary:
Overall i like Jonathan Knowles style of photography as it is diverse and he experiments with different products whether it be drink or food. Also i like the way he adds text to many of his photographs to add to the persuasive element of photograph

My Own Work:

This is an example of my own work. I was influenced by Jonathan Knowles as i wanted to look at photographing drinks as this is something that he specialises in. Also i was influenced by the way he pays a lot of attention to the background to ensure that it reflects the product in which he is advertising. This is apparent in my photograph as i decided to use cubes of ice as a background as this helped portrayed the drink as ice cold and refreshing.
