Project Proposal

For this unit, we are allowed to chose our own project brief. I have deiced that i am going to do commercial photography which is the art of using photographs which are used to sell products. This means that the photographs have you entice the audience to then persuade them to look into the product. When doing this project i will research into the common element of commercial photograph as it purely there to sell a company or brands product therefore it has to influential to the people consuming it.

Here are some example of the commercial photograph in which i would like to focus and explore during this project.

Make up

Perfume and Aftershave

Food and Drink
Sport

Fashion
A
When approaching this project i would first start by making some mind maps of different shoot which i can do including studio and location. Gathering all my ideas together will allow me to refer back to them when planning shoot and also i will be able to rule out which shoot are realist or not.I would like to get research in the slogans and layout of other commercial photograph to ensure mine look like commercial photograph. Also by looking at famous and current commercial photography i will be influenced to explore different styles and approaches when advertising different products/
I would start of with the food and drink commercial photograph as i feel this will be one of my most comfortable to start with as i had previously photographed food. I would then move on to make-up and  clothing as this is something that i feel would need more planning and by this time i should be more familiar with the convention of commercial photography.

I have found some influential work for this project:

Lisa Burrett is one of the commercial photographs i looked at. She is most famously known for commercial photograph for brand such as Adidas, Levis, Pampers and beauty and fashion brands. This is the main areas in which i would like to explore in the project therefore i have been influenced by this photographer the most.

Here is some of her work for different brands, companies and products:

This is one of Lisa Burrett's Pampers commercial photographs.

This is one of Lisa Burrett's Levis commercial photographs

This is one of Lisa Burrett' s Beauty commercial photographs

When looking at all of Lisa Burrett's work i noticed that the company logo or slogan is one of the main elements of commercial photograph as it is all about selling a company or brands product.

Depth of Field Technique Page

What is depth of field?
Depth of field is how much of the photograph is in focus based on distance

How do you do it?
There are two different kinds of depth of field- minimum and maximum depth of field
Minimum being when the foreground is in focus and the background is not and Maximum being where everything in the photograph is sharp and in focus.

Minimum Depth of Field

  1. Get close to your subject
  2. Make the aperture bigger(a smaller number)
  3. Use a larger zoom
Maximum Depth of Field
  1. Get far away from your subject
  2. Make the aperture smaller(a bigger number)
  3. Use a smaller Zoom.

Sequencing Technique Page

What is sequencing?
Sequencing is a succession, something that follows another thing.

How do you do it?

  1. First you need to decide what subject you are going to shoot. An example which you could do is class members standing in a line and then taking turns to sit down or turn around.
  2. Once you have decided what you are going to shoot, you need to ensure that your camera remain in the same place and distance from the subject and the only thing changing is the position of the subjects. This is what will determine the effect working or not.
  3. Once you have your desired photographs, upload them to Photoshop
  4. Open a new transparent A4 document in Photoshop
  5. Change the levels and curves to the photograph which you would like to use for you sequence
  6. Then re-size them to ensure they will fit on the A4, however make sure they are all the same size
  7. Now place the photographs on the A4 document starting with the first and ending with the last. It is up to you how you arrange them depending whether the page is landscape or portrait and how many photograph you have.
  8. Once you are happy with the positioning of your photograph, flatten the image.
  9. You are now ready to print.

Sequencing Work Diary

This is my sequencing photograph which i created by taking 4 photograph in which the subject change position in turn one after the other. To ensure than this technique would be a success i had to make sure that the camera was placed in the same position and distance away from the subject during every photograph otherwise the technique would not work. I simply did this by placing the camera on a tripod and keeping in the same place on the ground.

Image within an Image Work Diary

This is a combined video which i made for my image with an image task. I achieved this my taking a photograph of the subject holding a photo fame, and the recorded a short video of some people on the swings. Then using final cut pro i was able to insert the video into the fame making it look like the subject is holding the video. This was a much more creative and different way of showing an image within a image opposed to a still photograph. I decided that i wanted the model to be looking down at the frame as i felt it would make it look more realistic and as if she was actually holding the video in the frame.
